On Monday 29th February we held our Fairtrade Day as part of the annual Fairtrade Fortnight event which takes place all over the country. The theme this year was breakfast, which we celebrated by holding an all-day breakfast event in the foyer.

The main attraction was the “Fairtrade Flat” which was set up to demonstrate that we can change the lives of farmers all over the world before we even leave the house in the morning. By simply buying Fairtrade items for breakfast, we can contribute to higher household incomes for the people who make them and ensure that they are less vulnerable to poverty.

Pupils visited the breakfast event in their lessons throughout the day, where they got the opportunity to sample Fairtrade blueberries and bananas as well as various Fairtrade spreads on toast. Strawberry jam and clear honey were a definite favourite! We also ran a juicing competition between the four houses which was made up of individual efforts to squeeze as much fresh orange juice as possible in thirty seconds. Bannister were the overall winners and their House Captain, Lucie Moss, proudly accepted their Fairtrade House Competition certificate at the end of the day. All of our breakfast items were very kindly donated by the Co-operative Store in Chesterton, Sainsburys in Newcastle and Morrisons at Milehouse.

The day was run by the Fairtrade Group: Amy Hoang, Jacob Colledge, Ben Stockton, Leanne Gardner, Libby Fowler, Chloe Longmore, Hollie Johnson, Hollie Mayer and Jacob Walton. These pupils did an amazing job of engaging their peers with the positive impact that eating breakfast can have on our own lives and the lives of others around the world.

The whole school enjoyed the variety of breakfast items available and we look forward to supporting this positive start to Fairtrade Fortnight with Fairtrade-based lessons across the curriculum in the coming weeks.
