The Year 11 football squad ended the season crowned winners of the North Newcastle Cup.  This completes a fantastic double for the boys having gone unbeaten against all the High Schools in Newcastle to be District League Champions.

The match was hosted by Newcastle Town FC and played under the floodlights of their home ground, Lyme Valley Stadium.  The evening kick-off meant that the squad could get the full experience of a night match in a semi-professional setting with a good number of supporters including parents, pupils and staff gathered to cheer on the lads.

The match began with Chesterton straight on the front foot before Wolstanton grew in to the game and began to take control with a great deal of possession.  A succession of corners for both teams left both goal keepers untroubled but the high pressing game played by Chesterton drew Wolstanton in to mistakes.  Pressure from right wing back Dan Keen forced a misplaced pass inside and this was picked up by Jake Bennett.  From fully 25 yards Jake shifted the ball to his left foot and he spun a curling shot high in to the air.  The Wolstanton keeper seemed to lose the flight of the ball and was caught too high out of goal as the ball dropped beautifully in to the Wolstanton net to get Chesterton up and running.

Chesterton doubled their lead just before half time.  The ball was pinched in the centre circle by Jake Bennett who knocked the ball square to Dan Keen.  Daniel’s ball in to the channel was met by Cole Cadagan who allowed the ball to roll in front of him before whipping the ball first time in to the penalty box.  A mistake by the Wolstanton centre back allowed the ball to pass over his head and in to the path of the oncoming Tom Lomax.  He was able to bring the ball down and finish with aplomb past the goalkeeper from the penalty spot in to the bottom left hand corner of the net.

The second half continued much in the same way as the first. Wolstanton controlling much of the play without actual creating many chances to trouble the Chesterton keeper Mitch Coxon.  Substitutions were made as the large pitch began to take it’s toll and Cameron Aubury and Brad Reynolds were replaced by Joe Redfern and Jamie Harley respectfully.  One break away did cause the Chesterton backline a concern with a ball over the top being met by the Wolstanton forward.  He only managed to lift the ball over the oncoming keeper but Lewis McDonald had recovered superbly to clear the ball off the line.

Ten minutes later Wolstanton were punished for not taking their chances.  As Wolstanton throw in, deep in the Chesterton half, was headed clear by Dan Keen and then helped on it’s way by Lewis McDonald.  Tom Lomax was left to compete for the lofted ball with the Wolstanton centre half, moving the ball forwards with his first touch and accelerating towards the oppositions goal from the half way line with two in pursuit.  As the goal keeper rushed the edge of his box Tom was able to nudge the ball beyond him and in to the bottom left of the goal to put the game out of reach and Chesterton on their way to glory.

But Chesterton and Tom in particular were not finished yet.  With the time ticking away Tom Lomax completed his hat trick. More good work from the Chesterton midfield broke up the Wolstanton play and captain Kyle Yemm was able to play the ball between full back and centre half for Tom to take in his stride and smash home from 12 yards out.

The final whistle concluded a 4-0 victory for the boys and ended the season on a high.  Congratulations to all of the squad involved this year.
