CCSC pupils joined readers from around the world to celebrate the 17th annual World Book Day on Thursday 6th March 2014. The book themed bonanza is marked in over a hundred countries across the globe.
This year the theme for secondary school pupils is 'Writes of Passage'. Young people and adults have nominated books that have changed their lives and the list of the 50 most popular books has been published.
In World Book Day assembly, Mrs K Melvin, Head of English, shared some particular Chesterton favourites with the school, including 'To Kill a Mockingbird', the personal favourite of headteacher, Mrs L Jackson. The English department is currently compiling its own list of the fifty most popular books within Chesterton Community Sports College.
The school library was the focus of World Book Day events on Thursday. Mrs D Thompson, school librarian, organised an array of activities that attracted large numbers of pupils to the library.
There was a book based activity for everybody including; the national design a bookmark competition, a book quiz, a colourful book cover search and the ever popular 'get caught reading quiz'. This last activity is unique to CCSC and involves identifying twenty teachers who have all been caught reading, and photographed partly obscured by their favourite books.
Part of the library was turned into a cinema at lunchtime on World Book Day with a showing of the film 'The Hunger Games' which is one of the 'Rights of Passage' books. There was even popcorn available for a genuine cinematic experience.
World Book Day was enjoyed by everyone who took part and the event really helped to inspire a passion for reading in both pupils and staff.
