Year 8 students have been learning about the climate and environment of tropical rainforests. During the last week in March, on what felt like the wettest day of the year, 50 students visited Chester Zoo to identify some of the rainforest animals we had been learning about in the classroom. Many students spotted squirrel monkeys, poison dart frogs and the great hornbill to name just a few.

In the afternoon, we attended a rainforest workshop, which was delivered by one of the zookeepers. Students learned about how the rainforest animals have adapted to the environment of the Amazon – the largest rainforest in the world.

The most daring students touched a giant hissing cockroach and a black rat snake. The zookeeper talked through how the animals have special adaptations to enable them to survive in the rainforest. Five skulls were also displayed around the room, these were to be identified as a particular rainforest species.

Despite the wet weather, spirits were high and all of the students had a fantastic time.
