The year 2014 was an incredibly successful one for Chesterton Community Sports College. Outstanding GCSE results of over 70%  five or more grades A* - C including English and Maths over the last three years (71% in 2014, 75% in 2013, 72% in 2012) ensured that CCSC consolidated its position as one of the top performing schools in the area. 

Mrs L Jackson, Executive Headteacher, said: "I am immensely proud of the way students and staff have worked together to achieve such outstanding GCSE results".

Pupil numbers continued to rise in 2014 and significant refurbishment took place to accommodate this, including a fabulous new decked quad, state of the art computer facilities with Apple Macs and ipads and new lighting and carpets.

A huge variety of extra curricular activities took place in 2014 with many sporting successes,  flourishing performing arts including an acclaimed Remembrance Concert, numerous school trips and significant charity and community work.

The Heartstart Programme was extended to our partner primary schools with CCSC pupils helping to deliver the hands on training. All Year 7 participated in a 'Skills for Life Day' with a focus on healthy eating, first aid and road safety. Year 10 History students were inspired by the Roman Medicine Roadshow and in the Performing Arts department the heats for 'Chesterton's Got Talent' showcased some fabulous  performances. The PE department launched their first Italian ski trip.

Fairtrade Day had a  focus on Fairtrade bananas across the curriculum and a smoothie making bike in the foyer used pedal power to turn Fairtrade bananas into healthy drinks. CCSC pupils won awards in the UK Intermediate Maths Challenge and in the regional Biology Society competition. During half term two modern languages teachers joined an international study group in Spain. 'Chesterton's Got Talent' was won by Year 11 singer Alice Jones.

Key Stage 3 pupils enjoyed some trips out with Year 8 going to Chester Zoo and Year 7 to the Black Country Museum. Back at school, World Book Day was marked with an exciting collection of  literary activities and competitions. A number of students challenged themselves to complete the Sport Relief Swimathon and raise valuable funds for charity. Year 5 pupils from our feeder primaries relished the opportunities given to them on a taster day at CCSC.

Year 10 and 11 Performing Arts students travelled to London for a residential trip which included theatre visits, street performances in Covent Garden and a tour of the Harry Potter film set. The school was awarded the Fair Aware award by the Fairtrade Foundation in recognition of  our progress in promoting Fairtrade throughout the school and local community. Athletic successes saw six students qualifying to compete at county level. Year 11 students were kept busy completing their coursework whilst Year 8 began the options process to choice appropriate study pathways.

Year 8 pupils achieved silver and bronze awards in the UK Junior Maths Challenge and a team of Year 7 pupils came second place out of the local schools in the Festival of Chemistry at Keele University. The new prefect team was appointed from Year 10 and the outgoing Year 11 team were treated to a meal out to thank them for their work over the year. At half term the study days organised by the Maths, Science and History departments were appreciated by Year 11 GCSE students.

 Year 11 worked diligently throughout the main GCSE exam period. During Creative Learning Week all pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 took part in an extended project: 'Eureka' involved studying the science, maths and history of Classical Greece, 'Life Thru' a Lens'  provided the chance to develop photography skills, 'Going Places' explored types of transport on a variety of visits, 'Egg Race' provided practical design projects, 'Flight' looked at this fascinating subject from different perspectives, 'Challenge' involved extending personal limits in adventurous sports, 'Drama' produced a performance of Macbeth and 'Make, Eat, Visit' brought out pupils' creative talents. The MFL department took a group to Barcelona to experience Spanish language and culture first hand.

Year 10 students used Post 16 Week to start exploring their options after CCSC. Exchange students from San Diego, USA, enjoyed participating in the life of the school. The wonderful new decking area was opened to pupils.

 A fun packed Sports Day saw Shakespeare House emerge as victors and a glorious Summer Concert featured music, drama and dance items. The class of 2014 marked the end of their school days with a glittering Prom Night at the Comus Restaurant, Keele. The History department took a group of students to an archaeological dig at Bromborough on the Wirral and another group had their letters to an unknown soldier published as part of a national WW1 memorial. The academic year concluded with the annual Certificate Evening which recognised outstanding achievements across the curriculum.

The exam results were excellent with 71% of Year 11 gaining 5 or more GCSE grades A* - C including English and Maths and CCSC became one of the highest performing schools in the area.

The site staff were busy fitting new lighting and carpets throughout much of the school and the IT staff completed extensive upgrades of equipment including new Apple Mac computers and ipads.

The large new Year 7 intake settled in quickly to life at CCSC. Open Night showcased the work of the school to pupils and parents in Years 5 and 6 and many of them were extremely impressed when they took up the offer of tours during the school day. The online Parent Portal was relaunched and workshops were started to help parents and carers make the most of this facility. A Maths trip to Keele University was a chance for KS4 students to enrich their understanding of the subject.

Year 7 able and talented pupils and their parents shared an evening workshop of fun and interactive activities, designed to assist parents with supporting their children to achieve their potential. The MFL department held an evening meeting for parents of Year 9 students to explain the requirements of GCSE in French, Spanish and Italian and to provide strategies for language learning. A project to provide enrichment for able Year 6 pupils in English and Maths proved popular with the local primaries. CCSC was represented at the North West Regional Fairtrade Conference.

A group of KS3 pupils visited Westminster as guests of our local MP and enjoyed finding out his views in a question and answer session. The Maths department took Year 11 students to an enrichment day at Keele University where they studied key topics for top grades at GCSE and worked alongside current Keele students.  A Year 9 Able and Talented evening demonstrated to parents and pupils, via some fun actitivies,  how to achieve top grades at GCSE. Charity work was prominent in November with a Childen in Need netball match and preparing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

An impressive Remembrance Concert was staged in conjunction with our feeder primaries and a packed house was moved by the programme of music, poetry and drama inspired by WW1.

 

Salavation Army chequeDecember 2014

Year 11 students completed their mock GCSE exams and a School Council was launched. A team of Year 7 girls won the Newcastle Schoosl Futsal Tournament.

GCSE Textiles students gained creative inspiration from their visit to the Clothes Show in Birmingham and Year 7 pupils enjoyed a trip to the New Vic Theatre to see 'The Borrowers'. A Community Day involved pupils helping with activities at Churchfields Primary and bringing festive cheer to residents of Chesterton Lodge.

 

Throughout December fund raising activities supported the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal and as term finished CCSC was delighted to donate £855 to this worthy cause.
