Here at Chesterton Community Sports College, we follow a knowledge-based Mathematical curriculum over a 5-year cycle, building on our bespoke ‘Crucial Knowledge’ and using our purpose written ‘Know Remember Apply’ worksheets. This provides a structured teaching framework, enabling staff to integrate bespoke teaching approaches alongside personalised lessons and resources.
We broadly follow the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) curriculum, which aligns closely with the Mathematics National Curriculum. Students are prepared for the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (1MA1) qualification, which is offered at both Foundation and Higher tiers. The Foundation tier allows students to achieve grades 1–5, while the Higher tier offers grades 3–9.
Our bespoke teaching and learning package is designed to develop both skills and confidence, which we believe best prepares students for the demands of GCSE examinations and, just as importantly, the wider world beyond Post-16. Most of our resources are carefully designed and developed by our experienced staff and are tailored to reflect the abilities and needs of each teaching group.
The department holds school subscriptions to a range of online resources, including Educake, Maths Box, Maths Pad, Go Teach Maths and Whiteboard.fi. These platforms are used regularly within lessons and to support extended learning beyond the classroom. We pride ourselves on being forward-thinking in our use of modern technology and in supporting pupils’ organisation of work. As part of this approach, we use electronic class notebooks through Microsoft OneNote.
We also use traditional exercise books for selected tasks and assessments. This work is often photographed and uploaded to students’ electronic notebooks, allowing for efficient feedback and easy access for future revision or recap. These digital notebooks provide an excellent platform for feedback, marking and student reflection. In addition, all teaching groups use Microsoft Teams and Outlook, enabling seamless communication between staff and students.
