Teaching and Learning at Key Stage 3
Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.
Teaching and Learning at Key Stage 4
The Technology department offers thee GCSEs; these are Design & Technology, Hospitality & Catering and Engineering Design.
The Technology department aims to prepare pupils to participate in tomorrow's rapidly changing technologies. Pupils are encouraged to develop their ability to explore design opportunities and stakeholder needs, wants and values, and to develop and effectively communicate realistic design proposals that meet these requirements. They will develop their decision making skills and the ability to critique and refine their ideas throughout the process. They will also gain a broad knowledge of materials, components, technologies and practical skills and will learn how to use these safely to develop high quality, imaginative and functional prototypes.
Across Years 9–11, students develop progressively stronger engineering design skills through a structured sequence of learning. In Year 9 (R039), they build core communication skills by exploring sketching techniques, isometric and orthographic drawing, shading, annotation, design theory, simple CAD, modelling, and producing a small design portfolio. In Year 10 (R040), they apply these skills to real design problems by analysing client needs, evaluating existing products, developing design criteria, refining ideas through iterative sketching, and modelling using CAD, physical materials, and prototypes, leading to a final design solution with justification. In Year 11 (R038), students bring all their knowledge together by studying design briefs, specifications, design processes, materials, manufacturing, evaluation, and sustainability, while preparing for the January exam through regular practice, mock assessments, and targeted revision of exam terminology and command words.
