Year 9
Students begin Year 9 with a focus on the first Non-Examined Assessment Unit, R094 – Visual Identity and Digital Graphics. Non-Examined Assessment is conducted through a live assessment task set by the exam board, and students submit their work for moderation in the summer of Year 9.
Students will develop their understanding of how visual identity is used in media products and learn how to plan, design and create digital graphics using industry-standard software. They will also build research, planning and evaluation skills which are essential for success in the course.
Year 10
Students in Year 10 focus on the second Non-Examined Assessment Unit, R095 – Characters and Comics. Non-Examined Assessment is conducted through a live assessment task set by the exam board, and students submit their work for moderation in the summer of Year 10.
Students will explore how characters are created for media products and will design and develop their own original characters and comic strips. They will continue to strengthen their creative, planning and analytical skills, alongside developing their ability to work independently and respond to a client brief.
Year 11
Students begin the examined unit, R093 – Creative iMedia in the Media Industry. Lessons focus on learning and applying the theoretical content required for the written examination. Regular retrieval, recap and exam practice are embedded throughout the year to prepare students fully for assessment.
Students have the opportunity to sit the examination in January and/or June of Year 11, depending on progress.
Unit R093 – Creative iMedia in the Media Industry
This unit is assessed by an exam.
In this unit, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the media industry, including how media products are planned, created and distributed. Topics include:
- Topic Area 1 – The media industry
- Topic Area 2 – Factors influencing product design
- Topic Area 3 – Pre-production documents
- Topic Area 4 – Distribution considerations
Unit R094 – Visual Identity and Digital Graphics
This unit is assessed by a set assignment.
In this unit, students will learn how and why visual identity is important to organisations and how this is applied to digital graphics. They will plan, design and create their own digital graphics based on a client brief. Topics include:
- Topic Area 1 – Purpose and properties of visual identity
- Topic Area 2 – Planning digital graphics
- Topic Area 3 – Creating digital graphics
Unit R095 – Characters and Comics
This unit is assessed by a set assignment.
In this unit, students will explore how characters are created to meet the requirements of a target audience and client brief. They will design and create their own original characters and comic strips. Topics include:
- Topic Area 1 – The use of characters in media products
- Topic Area 2 – Planning and creating original characters
- Topic Area 3 – Planning and creating a comic strip
