This week Year 10 and 11 pupils have been given the opportunity to experience college ‘taster’ sessions in various subjects. The first experience pupils were given was in Business, IT and Events. This taster session (at Newcastle Under Lyme College) gave the Year 11 pupils an insight into the business world. Following a tour of the college, pupils had sessions (led by college lecturers) that gave them an insight into what A Level and BTEC courses would be like in those subjects.
Reaseheath College was another destination offering ‘taster’ sessions. Pupils applied to experience a day at the college and these courses  included ‘Animal Management’ and ‘Patisserie and Baking’. Accompanied by Mrs Hall, pupils were once again given an insight into their options Post 16.
Newcastle College then hosted a taster session in ‘Photography’. This session included a photoshoot where the pupils were shown how to use a camera and lighting effectively. They were then given the chance to take photographs of each other. The afternoon session was spent in the editing suite where the pupils were taught how to photoshop their own images. On departure, each pupil was given a copy of their edited image.
Mrs S Hawkins took a group of Year 11 boys to Newcastle College to enjoy a ‘taster’ in Construction. The boys were given a tour of the college followed by sessions in bricklaying, joinery, painting and decorating and then finally electrical engineering. The boys were allowed to explore their talents and they left with clear ideas of what choices they had Post 16.
A selection of Year 10 and 11 pupils opted to attend a ‘taster’ in Hair and Beauty (once again at Newcastle College). The girls were treated to a pamper session where they were shown how to wash and style hair similar to that of a salon. They were then given the chance to paint their nails; all demonstrating the talent required for this field.
Finally, Performing Arts pupils were treated to ‘taster’ sessions at Newcastle College. The sessions included workshops in Music Technology and Performing Arts. Our talented pupils left feeling highly motivated by the fantastic technology and facilities in this subject area.
The experiences have been extremely positive and all ’tasters' have been useful in helping our pupils decide their next steps! We look forward to arranging more in the future.
